Volcano Dream Meaning

To put simply, a volcano is an opening in the Earth’s surface. Often found in a mountain, the opening allows gas, hot magma and ash to escape from beneath the Earth’s crust. So why would a volcano be symbolic in my dreams?

The volcano becomes a part of you, how your inside world reacts with the outside world, an unconsciousness communication with the conscious. It becomes a very powerful symbol mirroring repressed feelings, drives or emotions that has now reached the surface. The image may also be a reflection of and unpredictable or volatile event in your life.

A volcano is riddled with metaphoric symbolism that encourages the dreamer to explore what might be bubbling below the surface. When the pressure builds from underneath the surface it represents what is unknown to you that poses a potential threat.

Volcano Dreams

Any sort of natural disasters that occurs in your dreams such as earthquakes, wildfires, tsunamis or hurricanes contains elements of change within the individual. However this change might be confronted with resistance from the ego as you could be facing the inevitable.

Volcanic eruptions are partly driven by pressure from dissolved gas that occurs below the surface. Similar to the gases pushing its way out of a champagne bottle, this inner energy has been bubbling for sometime and needs to come out.

Despite how dangerous the volcano presents itself in your dream it needs to erupt in order for change to undergo – similar to the meeting points of “tectonic plates” this might be a reflection of a psychological shift happening in your life.

Volcano Symbolism:

  • Conscious shift,
  • Repressed anger, stress, displeasure, revenge,
  • Erupting sexual urges,
  • Personal transformation.

 Running From Erupting Volcano

Anytime you are running away from something “erupting” becomes metaphoric relating to avoidance of something unknown to you. The location of the volcano tells you that its brewing from below, underneath the surface that has erupted – you must face the facts.

Your dream will provide you with metaphoric clues that will help narrow down the meaning of the dream. Noticing hot magma or lava would interpret differently than seeing the volcano explode in the distance. Furthermore the locations, fear, danger and people in the dream are all pieces of the puzzle that can be put together.

Volcano Dreams: Lava Meaning

Dreaming of lava brings your attention to heated emotions, a long slow burn, and release. Alternatively lava can be seen as a symbol of transformation or healing as the old is covered by the new. Something that needs time to cool in order to cover.

Noticing a volcano erupting connects the dreamer to tension, expression, creative bursts, repression of emotions. As if your awareness of repressed urges, fears, terrors have let go and now its time for the healing process to begin.

Mountains are symbolic in our dreams that connect the dreamer to life challenges, danger, obstacles, transcendence and spiritual elevation.

Questions:

  1. Did the volcano pose a threat, or where you off in a safe distance?
  2. Was the volcano active, dormant or extinct? (past, present, future).
  3. What were your emotions expressed in the dream?
  4. Do you feel as if you are ready to erupt emotionally in your life?
  5. Do you have an inability to express how you feel?
  6. Could it reflect relationships, social revolutions, tensions.

Biblical Meaning Volcano

In Exodus 19:18 they speak about Mount Sinai erupting implying the Lord had descended it on fire. In the bible dreaming of a volcano can relate to repressed anger that erupts when not controlled.

Now Mount Sinai was wrapped in smoke because the Lord had descended on it in fire. The smoke of it went up like the smoke of a kiln, and the whole mountain trembled greatly.

In my dream There was talk of a local volcano going to explode but we (my friend, i and my husband) thought it was just the “media” trying to scare us or the weather “presuming of the worst” My husband wasn’t able to move much, he was wrapped up in blankets on a pet bed downstairs in My friends house which was on a hill. Her house was a classic 3 story bungalow. The top level having a little castle type of room My husband was sleeping “recovering” from something. Which required a lot of attention because he couldn’t walk… Read more »

Thanks so much for this. I had a dream that I was visitng a town I actually used to live in that had a dormant volcano in it (Mt Shasta). In it I lived close by and just went into town to get out of the house and do something different. While in town it began to erupt and everyone was evacuating and I didn’t have a way to leave. I was waiting on a bus that would take forever to get there and the lava would have reached by the time it got there. I began hitchhiking hoping someone… Read more »

In my dream I was approaching the volcano from what would have been a safe distance. It was in the process of erupting and I was pretty happy about going towards it while some group I was with wasn’t.

Not sure what approaching it would mean but I do relate to the listed symbolisms of the volcano itself. It was a very short dream.
